Warner Jazz 'Original Album Series' - Brazil
GILBERTO GIL
Released: 1st April 2013
A five album collection from the groundbreaking Brazilian icon Gilberto Gil, fundamental in the constant redefinition of Brazilian popular music
Since the 1960’s, singer, writer and composer Gilberto Gil has led and defined Brazilian music, from post-Bossa to Tropicalismo. Radically innovative in the music scene, the Topicalismo movement assimilated pop culture to national genres. Deeply critical on political and moral levels, Tropicalismo ended up being repressed by the authoritarian regime and Gil was imprisoned and exiled.
When Gil returned to Brazil in the 1970’s, he began a series of anthological records a conceptual trilogy made up by Refazenda (of country extraction), Refavela (with rhythms from Jamaica, Nigeria, Rio and Bahia) and Realce. The latter, recorded in Los Angeles, fixed his option for pop music, which would direct the outcome of his work in the 80’s. All of these albums are featured in this collection, as well as 1984’s Raca Humana and the 2002 live recording Kaya N’Gan Daya.
With a career over four decades long, he is one of the most relevant and best known performers in his field. With 50 albums released, Gilberto Gil has 12 gold records, 5 platinum albums, 7 Grammy awards, and more than 4 million records sold. Warner are proud to release a five album compilation of some of his very best work.
