Tim Garland is widely known as one of the UKs most successful musical exports working in jazz. Much of his output reflects interests beyond conventional jazz boundaries and he is increasingly acknowledged for large ensemble writing including many orchestral pieces, works for chamber ensembles, choirs, and of course many commissions from jazz ensembles of all kinds. He first made international waves playing saxophone, bass clarinet and flute with Chick Corea, an ongoing collaboration today. He also was featured with Bill Brufords Earthworks for over four years and has an ongoing commitment with two award winning ensembles: The Lighthouse Project, and Acoustic Triangle. He is composer-in-residence at Newcastle University.
Garland is the 2006 “Musician Of The Year” in the UK’s parliamentary Jazz Society Vote. He also won a major BBC award for innovation, for his Lighthouse project and the highly acclaimed CD “If The Sea Replied”.
Garland has written for the LSO, the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Northern Sinfonia, Westminster Abbey Choir and many other ensembles that are drawn to his eclectic vision, he likes to refer to his wide- ranging output as a “Diverse Unity”.
Other Projects
Tim Garland's Lighthouse Project
Garland’s most ambitious and eclectic project was released on Sirocco in 2005. “If The Sea Replied” mixes a string orchestra, a dynamic trio and solo improvisations live inside a lighthouse, to magical effect.
“Sure-footed virtuosity ... a dazzling standard”. The Times
The core trio, being Asaf Sirkis (Udu, drums and percussion), Garland on saxes, bass clarinet and bass flute, and probably the UKs best ever jazz pianist Gwilym Simcock, are an orchestra unto themselves, mixing a range of rhythms from the Middle East, Spain and South America with highly interactive and lyrical jazz.
However, the image of the lighthouse extends to the very inclusive and international premise of the bands music: As the worlds first international “signposts” lit the way towards our current “global-village” achievements, the trio continue to collaborate with a range of diverse artists from various cultural backgrounds with an openness toward jazz. Recent concerts have featured superb dancer Sheron Wray, known for her improvisational solo work and with Jazz .
Tim Garland’s Northern Underground Orchestra
This explosive fourteen piece features some of the UK’s top soloists, with a pick of ace musicians from all across the north of England and Scotland, as well as featuring powerhouse soul diva Hannah Jones.
Soloists include Tim Garland (saxophones), Gwilym Simcock (fender Rhodes), Stuart McCallum (guitar), Asaf Sirkis (drums), Richard Iles (trumpet), Andy Schofield (alto sax) and Paul Booth (saxophones).
This will be a set of funky, creative, accessible new music, fronted by one of Europe’s most noted saxophonists and featuring Hannah Jones, one of the North East’s hidden vocal treasures.
