Jim Barr (bass); Clive Deamer (drums); Pete Judge (trumpet); Jake McMurchie (saxophone).
When a band reveals its influences to include Kings of Leon, Morphine and Albert Ayler, you know they're something out of the ordinary. So welcome The Blessing, a jazz-rock four piece from Bristol, ultra-contemporary in both sound and outlook. For instance take the drums and bass of Clive Deamer and Jim Barr (otherwise known as Portishead's live rhythm section). They're far from supporting players, never content with providing mere accompaniment to the upfront horns of Pete Judge on trumpet and Jake McMurchie on saxophone. Instead they steal a more lead role, attacking and plundering all over the place. Barr's bass actually sounds like it belongs on the records of Gang of Four.
With the two horns confidently riding these jagged rhythms, The Blessing come highly recommended to anyone whose ears are appreciative of the Acoustic Ladyland/Polar Bear axis of excellence and also to rock fans who never had a clue they liked jazz!
The Blessing's debut CD 'All is Yes' (CAKE CACD 78550) has been nominated in the Best Album category of this year's BBC Jazz Awards
