An amazing meeting of musical minds, spanning generations and geography. US tenor player Steve Grossman’s jazz pedigree was cemented when he joined Miles Davis’ group in 1969 as an 18 year old player loaded with as much ambition as talent. Filling the mighty shoes of Wayne Shorter, Grossman’s tenure with Davis’ ensemble informed his style with a fusion and hard-bop sensibility that has endured him to fans throughout his career. His other work includes periods with Lonnie Liston Smith, Elvin Jones, Gene Perla, Michel Petrucciani, Johnny Griffin and McCoy Tyner, as well as leading noted groups of his own. Joining him onstage in this quintet is Damon Brown, highly respected and “vastly accomplished” (The Observer) UK trumpeter. As well as being a greatly exciting talent on the European scene, Brown also plays with leading British group Killer Shrimp, winners of the 2007 Parliamentary Jazz Award for Best Jazz Ensemble.
The two have been playing together since 2004, and the Quintet is completed by the Italian trio of Nico Menci (piano), Aldo Zunino (double bass) and Alessandro Minetto (drums). All three players are hugely popular in their native Italy and work regularly on the international jazz scene, with collective credits including Enrico Rava, Nat Adderley, Eddie Henderson, Lionel ‘Slide’ Hampton and Art Farmer, to name but a few.
