Joe Locke is one of the most respected vibes players working today, his relentless energy and creativity showcased on many dozens of albums and on over twenty five as a leader. He is well known on the UK scene for his work with sax player Tim Garland’s Storms/Nocturnes group and for his work alongside Scottish hornsman Tommy Smith, and is also renowned for his playing with pianist Geoffrey Keezer. As a relatively new instrument to the jazz world, it is occasionally easy for vibes players to be labelled as direct descendents of early players such as Milt Jackson and Lionel Hampton, but Locke is one modern player who has most assuredly found his own voice - after Steve Nelson’s visit in June, fans of the vibes are spoilt at Ronnie’s this summer. His ‘Force Of Four’ group features Robert Rodriguez on piano, Ricardo Rodriguez on bass and Jonathan Blake on drums, delivering intense and highly melodic jazz with influences from Cuba and South America as well as the US mainstream.
Support comes from Toscha Comeaux and her trio. The sultry US singer effortlessly melds jazz, blues, gospel and soul, and launches her debut album This Could Be Love, a collection of smoky originals and standards.
