As one of the single most important figures in contemporary music, jazz or otherwise, John Coltrane should need no introduction. A ferociously inventive player, his saxophone revolutionised the way the music was approached from early on in his career when playing with Miles Davis during the mid Fifties to his more experimental later years up until his untimely death on July 17th 1967, and is still a massive influence today.

To coincide with the 40th anniversary of Coltrane's passing, Warner Jazz releases a celebration of his work on Atlantic Records spanning the period 1959 – 1964, encompassing some of his best compositions and recordings. Included are such classic tracks as Giant Steps, Mr P.C. and Cousin Mary from the Giant Steps album, his first release on Atlantic, with pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Art Taylor.

Along with recordings in the company of players like Freddie Hubbard, Wynton Kelly and Milt Jackson, Coltrane’s classic quartet with McCoy Tyner in piano, Steve Davis on bass and Elvin Jones on drums is also represented here. In the sleeve notes for this CD, jazz writer Stuart Nicholson describes how the group recorded enough material for three albums in one week in October 1960. The resulting My Favourite Things, Coltrane Plays The Blues and Coltrane’s Sound were released between 1961 and 1964, and The Very Best Of The Atlantic Years features tracks such as Every Time We Say Goodbye, Equinox, Mr Syms and Body and Soul.

Coltrane's music has always been held in the highest regard by aficionados of the genre. This album offers a retrospective of a particularly fruitful and productive stretch of his life on Atlantic Records that represents the essential heart of his playing and his legacy.
