Manchester United vs Chelsea?
“Joe, you coming out to watch the Champions League final next week?”
“Er, no... I’m going to Ronnie Scott’s to watch a Japanese pianist called Hiromi.”
“Right…”
Thing is, none of my mates understand quite what it means to be able to go to a club like Ronnie Scott’s whenever you like. Since we began promoting the club just over a year ago, I’ve been making the most of it and spending much of my time there, checking out some of the best musicians in the world, hanging out with other fans of the music and just soaking up the atmosphere. As many jazz fans and critics will testify, it’s one place you can turn up at, week in week out, and be guaranteed a night of exceptional music. In the last six months alone I’ve been treated to performances from the likes of Ahmad Jamal, The Funk Brothers, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton, Roby Lakatos, Ceder Walton, Billy Cobham, Kyle Eastwood….. and looking ahead there’s McCoy Tyner Trio with Joe Lovano, Pharoah Sanders, Benny Golson and Kenny Garrett all coming up soon.
It’s an incredible club with an incredible heritage and I feel privileged having been given the opportunity to work with them. Oh, and there’s always the pub round the corner that shows the football if I get desperate…..
