Little Feat
So I had the pleasure of experiencing my first gig at indigO2 last Friday. indigO2 is a venue within the O2 that, thanks to shows from the likes of Crowded House, Manic Street Preachers, Timbaland, George Clinton and KT Tunstall, is really making a name for itself as one of London’s finest new music venues. When Prince was playing his run of 21 shows at the O2 last year, indigO2 was the location for his legendary after show parties where he would appear unannounced on stage to jam into the early hours.
Unfortunately I wasn’t there for any of that but I was there last Friday to see the superb American US blues-rock band Little Feat. Little Feat were introduced to me by my Dad when I was about three. I didn’t really get into them until I was a bit older but, like many of the bands my Dad used to listen to when I was three, I now think they’re great.
Although a few people say that Little Feat don’t sound as good as the band they originally were (lead vocalist and chief songwriter Lowell George died in 1979) I felt that they reproduced the tight, funky grooves of the studio albums brilliantly. Their shows take you on a journey through rock, blues, jazz and R&B and their vast catalogue of hits, which includes the amazing Rock 'n' Roll Doctor, had everyone dancing in the aisles. There were plenty of opportunities for the band to show off their skills and I think my highlight (believe it or not) was an extended bass solo by the brilliant Kenny Gradney.
I’d recommend checking them out when they’re next in town.
Coincidentally, the venue is also programming some great jazz and next week Return To Forever will be gracing the stage for their only UK date as part of a huge world tour (their first in 25 years!).
