Out and About pt. 2

Another update, and another few great gigs to report on...

It was a real pleasure to see Finn Peters' performance at the Vortex Jazz Club in mid-June. I caught his set at Pizza Express in May for the launch of his new album 'Butterflies', and this was a chance get a more rounded perspective on his playing as he performed older music as well as the new tunes.

It was a late start to Stanley Clarke's Jazz Café show, the virtuoso bassist making an eager audience wait before coming on and launching into a strident fusion groove to open a night of music that spanned the breadth of his long career.

theJazz is dead, long live the Jazz!

At times, it can seem that Frank Zappa's oft-quoted assertion that, "Jazz ain’t dead, it just smells funny," is becoming increasingly hard to believe – it was recently announced that DAB radio station theJazz will come off air at the end of March after over a year of quality broadcasting, informed, intelligent opinions and above all excellent music that brought in over 400,000 listeners a month.

Joe Zawinul RIP

The past couple of weeks have not been kind to the living history of jazz music; Max Roach and Art Davis' passing hit us hard, and Zoe Zawinul's death yesterday morning was a huge loss to us all.
